Cooler Master Tempest GP27U

Cooler Master's brand new 4K gaming monitor is a powerhouse with superb performance. But it is expensive...

For my part, I have not yet taken the step over to the dark side and stepped up to 4K resolution on my main monitor, I am still running 2160x1440. This is mostly because it requires a really good computer to make games run well at a high resolution and also because I play mostly FPS games where I usually lower the resolution in favour of really high framerates. Now that I have recently built a new computer, the thoughts of changing to a 4K screen have started to occur again and I was therefore really excited when Cooler Master's new boastful screen GP27U appeared in the editorial office. On paper, it looks very promising with an IPS panel, Mini-LED lighting, Quantum DOT film, HDR, and all of this on top of being really fast with one millisecond response time. But does all of this justify the price tag of almost £800.

As I said, Cooler Master really pulls it off with the GP27U and the screen has just about everything you can imagine when it comes to finesse and functions. There is a built-in KVM switch, which is very convenient if you, for example, have a home office and want to run the same screen, keyboard and mouse to two different computers. You can easily switch between your personal PC and your work computer with a touch of a button on the screen without having to reconnect any cables. The table stand can be raised and lowered with adjustments in all directions and the base is designed like the Cooler Master's logo and takes up quite a bit of space, which is something I really prefer instead of a wide and sprawling foot that many monitors have that easily gets in the way of both your keyboard and mouse. The design is clean and I like the lighting at the back, which can be changed to any colour, but the build quality of the screen itself has a bit more to be desired as it feels a bit plasticky for its price and I would have liked to see a bit more lavish material choices.

The picture on this screen is among the absolute best I've seen, and it would be strange otherwise, I think considering what they put in. Because the IPS panel with Quantum DOT film has an incredibly good colour reproduction straight out of the box and it feels like each pixel is chiselled out by hand as the sharpness is top notch. It has Mini LED backlighting with 576 local dimming zones and it shows in the blackness and contrast, which is really, really black when it's needed. However, the viewing angle is not very large and it is not a screen that you watch a movie with a friend on. But what really impresses me is the brightness because with its 1200 nits (in HDR max mode) it hurts my eyes at full brightness, which is quite unusual. Fortunately, it is easy to adjust down to the appropriate level using the menu in the screen, which is clear and simple to use.

The panel in the screen has a refresh rate of 160Hz and it may seem a bit low, but considering that it is 3840x2160 resolution, it requires a really powerful computer to be able to come up with more frames per second. Above all, if you want to play with all graphics set to maximum, you do not need a higher frequency and I think it is difficult to see the difference compared to screens with, for example, 240Hz. The response time on the screen should be one millisecond, as it is on paper, but it's not quite right in reality and stops at just over two milliseconds when you measure in-game, but it's good enough for those of you who are not professional players and it's not something I even noticed when I played Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. What is really cool is that it's a 4K screen and games like Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Cyberpunk 2077 look absolutely magically good and with everything on ultra, the graphics are unparalleled and it reaches another level in the gaming experience itself with the enormous wealth of detail.

Cooler Master Tempest GP27U

The Cooler Master Tempest GP27U is a really good screen, but it'll make a big dent in your wallet and is best suited if you are going to play graphics-heavy games with HDR support. It is also good as a screen to work with graphics on, but requires a calibration as it is not optimised from the factory.

A bit flimsy build quality. Expensive.
